Autumn Equinox Ritual: A Release Ritual for Letting Go

September brings that first quiet turning of the seasons where the light changes, the air cools, and life starts asking for less clutter and more clarity. This autumn equinox ritual is a simple release ritual for letting go when you can feel you’re ready to outgrow something, even if you can’t fully name it yet.

You can do this ritual anytime you need a reset, but it’s especially supportive in September and around the autumn equinox.

This is not about forcing a huge transformation overnight. It’s about making space, calmly and on purpose.

What you’ll need

  • 1 candle – Gold, yellow, orange, red or brown
  • Paper + pen
  • A small bowl of salt (or sugar if that’s what you have)
  • A bag or box for donations or recycling
  • Optional: rosemary, bay leaf, or a cinnamon stick

Before you begin

Choose a small area to clear as part of the ritual: a drawer, your bedside table, your handbag, your downloads folder, your email subscriptions, anything.

Say (out loud or in your head):

I release what I’ve outgrown. I keep what supports the life I’m building.

The ritual: Autumn Equinox Release

1) Light the candle

Light your candle and let the flame become your steady point. Take three slow breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.

As you exhale, soften your shoulders and unclench your jaw.

Say (quietly or in your mind): I honour what’s ending, and I welcome what’s next.

2) Write what you’re ready to release

On your paper, write a short list. Keep it real and specific.

Examples:

  • The habit of saying yes when I mean no
  • The pressure to do everything perfectly
  • A story that I’m behind
  • Clutter that makes my home feel noisy
  • A relationship dynamic that drains me

3) Salt-seal the release

Sprinkle a pinch of salt over the list.

Say:

This is complete. This is finished. This can leave me now.

4) Choose one action that proves it

Now do a small, physical release.

Pick one:

  • Fill your donation bag with 5 items
  • Throw away or recycle what’s broken or expired
  • Unsubscribe from 10 emails
  • Delete 20 photos you don’t need (added extra
  • Clear one surface until it feels calm

As you do it, repeat:

I make space for what matters.

5) Close the ritual

Fold the paper away and place it under the bowl of salt for 24 hours. (If you prefer, you can tear it up and dispose of it immediately.)

Blow out the candle and say:

I am allowed to change. I am allowed to choose again.

Optional variations

  • For emotional heaviness: do the ritual after a shower and imagine the water rinsing away what you’re releasing.
  • For decision fatigue: release only one thing today. A single clean surface is still magic.
  • For extra cosy vibes: add rosemary or bay to the salt bowl and let the scent anchor the feeling of a fresh start.

Journal prompts

  • What am I holding onto out of habit, that I no longer need in my life?
  • What would feel lighter by this time next month?
  • Where do I need a boundary that protects my peace?
  • What do I want my home to feel like this autumn?

Affirmation

I release what no longer fits, and I welcome what supports me.

Taking it further

If you’d like a little structure for this season, pair this ritual with a simple intention-setting practice: one weekly check-in, one small clear-out, one moment of gratitude.

If you have a Mantra & Moon print or planner that helps you stay anchored, bring it into the ritual as your “what I’m inviting” reminder for the weeks ahead.
